A young Dundee ice-skater, who was told it was unlikely she would ever be able to skate again following an accident on the ice in March, has astounded her family, friends and coaches with a remarkable recovery.
Twelve-year-old Laura Kean, a member of the Great Britain Skating Team, broke her leg in three places during a training session at the Dundee Ice Arena. On arriving at the A&E Department of Ninewells, Laura’s father, Charles Kean, was advised by doctors that it was possible his daughter could lose her leg However, doctors were able to undertake treatment to straighten and re-align the bones and after a strict training regime, Laura has won her first competition since the fall. Charles said, “Laura has shown so much courage and determination over the past few months — she really has been through a lot.
“She was awarded a gold medal in Paisley on September 11 and is now training for the Dundee Open this week and for the British Championships in November. “Her determination to get back to fitness drew compliments from various sources, among them her coaches Debi and Simon, who reckoned they had never seen such courage in a young girl recovering from such an injury. “She has just done so remarkably well and shown what a strong-willed person she is. “I think she has fought back to become even stronger than she was before her broken leg and she is back on to her training regime as part of the British Squad.”
